Select three Resonators and see how well they work together.
Building an effective team composition in Wuthering Waves is essential for clearing endgame content like the Tower of Adversity, hologram bosses, and high-level domain challenges. A well-balanced team can increase your damage output by up to 50% compared to a randomly assembled group of Resonators. This guide covers the core principles of team building, including role balance, elemental coverage, and skill synergy.
The most effective team structure in Wuthering Waves follows a three-role archetype: Main DPS, Sub-DPS, and Support/Healer. The Main DPS deals the majority of the team’s damage during their field time and typically requires the most investment in echoes and weapons. The Sub-DPS provides off-field damage, energy regeneration, and setup for the Main DPS through quick-swap combos. The Support or Healer keeps the team alive, provides buffs, and enables the rotation. For example, a classic team like Jiyan (Main DPS) + Mortefi (Sub-DPS) + Verina (Healer) covers all three roles perfectly.
Wuthering Waves features six elements: Aero, Electro, Fusion, Glacio, Havoc, and Spectro. Some elements have natural synergy. For example, Havoc and Spectro form a strong pairing because Spectro abilities can trigger additional damage against Havoc-affected enemies. Fusion and Glacio enemies are weak to opposite elements, making coverage important for ToA floor progression. Ideally, your team should cover at least two different elements to handle enemy resistances. Triple-element teams are the most flexible but may sacrifice some resonance synergy for coverage. Dual-element teams with a shared element often benefit from shared echo set bonuses and resonance chain passives.
Every team has a rotation cycle where each character uses their skills, builds energy, and swaps to the next character. A smooth rotation requires that your Sub-DPS and Support generate enough energy to cast their ultimate before the Main DPS finishes their field time. Characters with the “energy_battery” synergy tag are especially valuable because they generate extra resonance energy for the entire team. Yangyang and Mortefi are excellent examples of Sub-DPS units that double as energy batteries. If your team lacks energy generation, you may need to equip Energy Regen main stats on your Support’s echoes, which costs damage potential. The Team Synergy Calculator above evaluates how well your three chosen characters share energy and cooldown timing.
There are two primary playstyles in the current meta. Quick-swap teams have all three characters dealing significant damage and rotating rapidly. Teams built around Changli or Encore excel at quick-swapping because their abilities deal high damage in short field time windows. Hyper-carry teams focus all investment on one Main DPS while the other two characters provide buffs, shields, and healing. Jiyan hyper-carry with Verina and a buffer is the classic example. Both compositions are viable for endgame content, but they require different echo builds and team rotations. The calculator accounts for these differences in the Skill Synergy dimension score by analyzing each character’s energy type and preferred playstyle.
The most common mistake is stacking too many Main DPS characters without enough energy generation or healing. Three DPS characters without a support will struggle in prolonged fights because they compete for field time and lack sustain. Another frequent error is ignoring element coverage against specific boss mechanics — fighting a Glacio-resistant boss with a triple-Glacio team halves your damage output. Finally, do not overlook the importance of weapon and echo set overlap. Characters that share the same weapon type or echo set can make farming more efficient. For example, both Jiyan and Calcharo use Broadblade weapons, and both benefit from heavy attack echo sets, making them interchangeable in certain team compositions.
